2027 NC Governor’s School Application Information

NC Governor's Summer School Program for Gifted and Talented 10th/11th Grade Students!!
WHAT IS IT??

The Governor’s School of North Carolina is the oldest statewide summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students in the nation. The program is administered by the State Board of Education and North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) through the Office of Advanced Learning & Gifted Education. Each summer, selected students are invited to Governor’s School to help build a learning community during a four-week residential session. The Governor’s School emphasizes collaborative efforts in all disciplines. Students are encouraged to explore and ask questions and to discover new possibilities that complement their high school instruction. Without the regular pressures of tests, scores, and grade point averages, students learn for the sake of learning. Students go through a local nomination process through their districts or schools before being nominated to the state level. Each district/school has its own process for determining nominees for NCDPI at the state level.

A few important application reminders:
  • 10th/11th grade students must meet at least one of the eligibility requirements listed on page 7 of the application.
  • Applications must be completed electronically. Handwritten applications will not be accepted.
  • Students should save the application to their computer and complete it in a PDF program rather than in a web browser.
  • The use of artificial intelligence is prohibited for all components of the application and creative process.
  • Each student needs two recommendations. At least one must be from a current or former high school teacher in the student’s application area.
  • Recommenders must use the official Governor’s School recommendation form and return it directly to the school counselor. Recommendations should not be returned to the student or sent directly to the state.

Initial applications and recommendations are due by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, November 2.

Academic applicants should have both essays completed. Arts applicants do not need to have their audition videos completed by the initial deadline.

Additional information regarding NC Governor School is available on the NCDPI Governor’s School website
